Mrs. Shirley T. Ledford, 80, passed to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 surrounded by her family at UNC Lenoir in Kinston.
Shirley was born December 16, 1936 in Norfolk, VA, the daughter of the late William Frank Turner and Wilda Turner Bondurant.
Shirley met the love of her life, Luther Ellis Ledford, Jr. while attending Wake Forest University. They were married August 29, 1959. Shirley and Luther remained avid Wake Forest Demon Deacon fans for life.
Shirley earned her Masters of Library Science from East Carolina University while employed as Librarian at Pink Hill Elementary School, where she touched the lives of every child who attended for almost 30 years.
An avid gardener of especially roses, Shirley loved to travel after retirement and spend time with her Pink Hill United Methodist Church family and especially her Park Circle Ladies.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William Frank “Bill” Turner, Jr. She will be greatly missed by her husband Luther; and her children, Ellis Ledford (Lynn) of Greenville; Tim Ledford (Miriam) of LaGrange; sister Bettye Mason (Bob) of Pasadena, CA; nephews, Michael Mason, Bill Turner, III,; nieces, Deborah Mason Dawes, Angie Turner Szczesny, and Christina Jay Turner.
“Grams” was especially proud of her grandchildren; Coley Ledford Edsall (Dave), Abby Ledford, Mallory Ledford and fiancé, Ty Kennedy, and Josh Ledford and her beautiful great-granddaughters, Mary Harper Edsall and Allison James Edsall.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Pink Hill United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be held following the visitation at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill.
