Andrew “A.V.” Spann
Kinston
“Papa” Spann was born on July 3, 1946 and passed away on October 15, 2017 at Kitty Askins in Goldsboro. He was a 1965 graduate from Jones Central High School, served as an MP in the U.S. Army and retired from Dupont with 35 years of service. Papa Spann was a Master Gardener and bragged on his corn and tomatoes every year. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lois Gray Spann; parents, Robert and Nancy Spann; brothers, Marion and Jimmy Spann; sister, Erma Mae Silance and grandson, Seth Dixon.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Dixon and husband, Ralph; and Cindy Dail and husband, William; grandsons, Spencer Dixon, Tanner Dixon and John Dail all of Kinston; brother, Lathan Spann of LaGrange, sisters, Melva Lee Gooding of Havelock, Alma Sue Smith of Trenton, and sister-in-law, Rachel Spann of Kinston. He is also survived by his special cousins, Betty Smith and Barbara Vause of Kinston; many special nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Debbie Rouse and her canine companion, Emmie Sue; and special friends, Angel Ramirez, Patricia Benitez, Victor Ramirez, Lizeht Ramirez and Rick Bostic. Many thanks to Dr. Gary Heck and Dr. Robert Gallaher for their many years of excellent care and to his special friends at UNC Lenoir Health Care.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17 at Grace Baptist Church on Hwy 58 South in Kinston. Funeral service will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
